September 27th The Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 21)
O God, you declare your almighty power chiefly
in showing mercy and pity: Grant us the fullness of your grace, that
we, running to obtain your promises, may become partakers of your
heavenly treasure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
8am: Holy Eucharist
Our early service is unaccompanied by music and usually lasts about 50 minutes. Coffee and fellowship are offered before the service begins in the parish hall, while the sanctuary is available for quiet prayer. Another coffee hour follows the service.
9am: Sunday School In addition to Nursery care for children under three, there are two classrooms of Godly Play offered from pre-school through 2nd grade. 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders are invited to their own classroom where they'll study the Episcopal Prayerbook and Catechism in a pre-confirmation type class. This year is brand new for us, so come early (or stay late of you're an eight O'clocker) and join us!
10am: Holy Eucharist
Our late morning service is accompanied by organ music, congregational singing, and the offerings of our adult mixed choir. On the first, and occasionally second, Sunday of each month, Soul Purpose, our contemporary music band, accompanies the liturgy. Nursery care is available for our youngest members and guests. A festive coffee hour for children and adults follows the Eucharist.

Upcoming Events
Pancake
breakfast this Sunday, between the services: This is another fund raiser for
scholarships to the Women's Retreat, October 23-25th at St. Andrew's
House. Come enjoy good food and fellowship! On Sunday, October 4th, following the 10am Eucharist, there will be a Church Work Day. Please plan to stay an extra couple hours to help with some end-of-summer maintenance on our beautiful building. Major tasks include windowsill painting, kneeler repair, and the sprucing up of our Sunday School classrooms. Tools and materials will be provided, and many hands make light work! The Pierce County Hunger Walk takes
place Saturday, October 10th and Christ Church will be sponsoring a
team this year. This PCHW is the largest walk for hunger in the Pacific
Northwest and generates the largest contribution to local food banks.
Please contact Robin Partington if you'd like to make a donation or
participate in the walk. Checks should be made payable to Pierce County
Hunger Walk. Check out the posters and brochures in the Parish Hall,
or visit www.pchungerwalk.org for details . Godly
Play - Please contact Kris O'Brien if you'd like to share your time and
talent and help reduce the materials cost in our new Sunday School
program . Kris has patterns to create many of the Godly Play materials,
ranging from simple cardboard and felt cut outs to more complex
woodworking projects.
Love INC's Christian bookstore:
Love In the Name of Christ is collecting and selling
pre-owned Christian books. If you donate or buy from them, it is really
three gifts for one act of service! 1. You will get a tax deductible receipt.
2. Someone else will have the benefit of growing closer to God through this
book. 3. It will help Love INC raise money to support the expenses of the
ministry, helping us to help those in need, without solely relying on financial
donations! The address of the store is: 9116 Gravelly Lake Dr. SW
Lakewood, WA. They are also in the process of creating an online bookstore so
you can shop in the comfort of your own home. The address is:
www.lovestreasury.com
and they hope to have it up and running soon. If you
have books to donate, give them to either Elsa or Joan McCullough.
Knitting
Ministry update:
Nine months of 2009 are almost over, and this is what the Knitting
Ministry has done so far this year. There have been 164 shawls knitted or
crocheted, along with 97 foster care blankets; 27 have been given to Franciscan
Hopsice care, 6 to our graduating Seniors, 17 have gone to members of our
parish or their friends and family, and 13 are currently in the Cornerstone
awaiting distribution. 351 military pocket prayer shawls have been mailed to
the troops. There are also four white shawls available for new babies or
baptisms. Our sincere thanks
to the donors of the small animals that accompany the foster care blankets.
Also to The Lamb's Ear Yarn Shop in Tacoma which has donated a considerable
amount of yarn to our ministry. The cleaners that I take the shawls to for
steaming and blocking are now doing that at no charge. The owner feels that
'this is for God's work', so we are grateful for her generosity. We are also
embarking on making newborn and premie hats for the area hospitals. Thanks to
all who have helped make this ministry so successful!
General Announcements
October is 'canned soup month' for the Food Bank. Thank you for your generosity!
Free FAX
machine:
There is a Lanier FAX machine in good condition, with the instruction booklet,
on the stage in the Parish Hall. It is looking for a home, so if you need a FAX
machine, please help yourself.
There is still time to order a CECoP apron! contact Vickey Clayton with your order. Proceeds support scholarships for the Women's Retreat.

Ready for Christmas?

Santa's Seconds Sale The
annual Santa's Seconds sale will be held on Saturday, December 5 from
10AM to 3PM. Setup will be on Friday, December 4, starting at 10AM. We
need volunteers! A light lunch will be served on both days. For
the past two years, profits from the sales have been higher than ever
before. This was due to the high quality of the donations and taking
the time to display them in an appealing manner. Things that always
sell well include jewelry, stationery, greeting cards, Xmas
decorations, clothing with a Christmas motif, linens, pictures,
knick-knacks, candles, toys, games, and current books. Items should be
in good repair. Old pieces of luggage; single, unmatched glasses and
coffee mugs; and old computers and accessories do not sell well. These
items would be best donated to local thrift shops. Donations
may be left in the basement of the Cornerstone or on the back of the
stage in the parish hall during the week preceding the sale. If you
have questions, please call Stephanie Roberts at 253/840-4370 or by email. Thank you!

Women's Retreat

Get Registered Now
Our annual Women's Retreat is fast approaching and it is
definitely a date you need to mark on your calendars. The date is
October 23-26th at St. Andrew's House, Union, Washington. The cost of
the weekend is $180. To save your spot fill out an application and pay
your $50 deposit. We are asking this year that the deposits be
non-refundable. I know the Huskies will be playing in Seattle but it
is only against Oregon so there is really no excuse not to come. Our
theme this year will be a Revisit to the Bad Girls of the Bible and
what we can learn from them. This is a book/tape series written by Liz
Curtis Higgs. We suggest that, if possible, you read the book before
coming to the retreat. You can find it in most Christian bookstores
and at Amazon.com new for $9.88 or used as low as $.90. There will be several copies in the church library within the next several weeks. The
Agenda for our weekends have never been set in stone; we laugh, we
visit and get to know each other better, we enjoy meals together along
with some study, singing, games and walks to refresh us before the
hectic holiday season starts. We have also been blessed with Lorna
Leen, who will be offering facial massages
and, hopefully, this year will lead us in a Yoga class. Mother Ann
Saunderson will again be our Spiritual Director leading us in prayers
and the Eucharist. Those who want to "just get away and do nothing" can
do just that. We also encourage ladies to come to the retreat even if for one night and a day or even just on Saturday. To
help defray the cost of the weekend for everyone and to provide
scholarships we will have a Pancake Breakfast on September 27th,
between the services. There are a few more things we have under our
veils so stay tuned to hear what is happening. Applications are
available in the Parish Hall and can be turned in to the office with
the deposit. If you pay your entire fee before October 1st there will
be a $10 discount. If you have any questions please ask Pat Horn, Roddi Barton, Gwena Hedlund or Vickey Clayton.
